Spotlight Nuclear Fuel
Services
ModularDesigns
recently had the opportunity to work with local
architect Roger Barnett of Design Build Construction and
Myra Keever, project manager from Nuclear Fuel Services,
on an office renovation project. The project scope
was to completely renovate the third floor of an office
building. The floor had currently been used as a shell
space and storage for NFS. Due to continued growth of
their company, over-crowding of existing spaces, and
simply the need to reorganize it was time to expand and
use the space more efficiently to address the needs of
their company. Under the
direction and programming of Myra and Roger, the space
was developed, the design was created, and the budget
was established. ModularDesigns was
asked to assist in taking the concept drawings and
develop a comprehensive furniture plan that would
address form, fit, function, and finance. NFS'
goals were to find an open office systems furniture
product and a corresponding private office furniture
product that was durable, functional, and price
sensitive. The ModularDesigns' team
went to work on developing a furniture program that
addressed all of their needs. According to
the MD design team, "We really felt from the beginning
that NFS would be an excellent candidate for our
blending program. With our extensive pre-owned furniture
accessibility, quality-driven environmentally friendly
remanufacturers, and our value based new product lines,
we were confident that a blending solution could be
developed." Creating a blending program requires a
different approach to product selection. ModularDesigns starts
the process by investigating the pre-owned market for
inventories that fit the basic requirements. "Finding
the right product, the right quantity, the right price,
and the right logistics can be an interesting process",
according to MD. "Sometimes you have to "weed"
through a lot of product but we have excellent brokers
in the market that help us find exactly what we are
looking for." In short order an inventory of clean
product was found. To ensure satisfaction a mock-up was
brought in to allow NFS to see and review the product.
The mock-up passed the test and also addressed Nuclear
Fuel Services' electrical and cabling requirements. The
issues of cost, durability, ease of reconfiguration, and
product that has a long life were accomplished.
According to MD, "the product was also very close to the
original cubicle design so very little modifications
were required. It was really a great find!" More
importantly, the cost savings allowed the project to
purchase a blending of remanufactured and new furniture
for the private offices and conference
room. Nuclear Fuel
Services' situation is very common according to the MD
design team. "In today's market everyone is looking for
creative solutions. Our success has come from our
ability to think outside the box when it comes to the
design, specification, purchase, and installation of
office furniture. We do not want to limit our customer's
options by only showing them new product. Many
times new product limits their choices, causes them to
reduce the amount of furniture they purchase, and could
also make them settle for a lower quality product.
The blending approach does require a deeper knowledge of
the furniture industry, good timing, specialized
logistics, and knowledge about multiple manufacturers
and products. The extra work is well worth it when
you are able to offer real solutions for your
customer. We are grateful to Nuclear Fuel Services
and for the opportunity to be part of this project."
The team at ModularDesigns would
like to congratulate Nuclear Fuel Services on a great
project and success in all future
endeavors. | |

Task Lights
 Different
tasks and users in the workplace require significantly
different levels of light which can not always be met by
ambient lighting. By using task lights, such as the
HumanScale Diffrient Light at each workstation, the user
can adjust the lights' levels to meet their individual
needs. This reduces the ambient light levels needed and
combined with energy-efficient task lights the energy
and cost-savings can be significant. Diffrient Lights
are also made of 100% recycled aluminum. They contain
77% LEED recycled content and can help a project achieve
LEED credits in a number of categories. To learn more

Design Discoveries
 When a budget
is made for a new project often times artwork and
accessories are overlooked or cut out. I am always sad
to see this happen because these small items can really
make a space feel finished and welcoming. I must admit
that these items can get very expensive very quickly,
but with the right design tools, a little can go a very
long way. By correctly placing a few pieces of artwork
in a long hallway, the artwork will break up the
monotone space and make an otherwise very boring part of
the building interesting and welcoming. Artwork gives
the eye a point of interest to focus on other than just
a solid wall color which can help reduce stress and
fatigue. Artwork and
accessories are especially important in a waiting room
or lobby area. A few simple pieces, correctly selected
and placed, can make waiting customers or patients feel
so much more comfortable.
Give us a call about artwork and accessories
for your new or existing space. It's a great investment
that can be made to fit into any budget!

President's
Corner
I was recently reading an article about how the
economic downturn could change the office industry
forever. Many top executives at furniture makers stated
that the recent forces currently impacting the industry could
result in some permanent changes. They went on to declare that
what the nation's economy is now experiencing is sure to alter
the landscape in which they operate. They continued to share
that as the economy comes back most customers will have
lingering memories, unsure about how their investment will
play out, and uncertain about their spending
habits. Most executives echo that customers will
be looking for simplicity, a need to optimize office space,
improve worker productivity, accommodate teamwork and
collaboration, sustainable business practices, and enabling
technology. Customers will be looking for harder-working
spaces and better ways to use office space that will house
fewer associates after a corporate downsizing, and finally
adapt to an overall reduction of square
footage. I agree totally with their comprehensive
analysis of the furniture industry and believe that this is a
good thing. What they are really talking about is change and
change is good. But change cannot occur until people get
involved. The first step to real change is to acknowledge it
and embrace it. One of the most exciting aspects of business
is the challenges that we face during difficult times.
Difficult times define true character. I believe we are at one
of those defining moments in time. According to Mac
Anderson, founder of Simple Truths (www.simpletruths.com)
"Just remember people are like sticks of dynamite; the power's
on the inside, but nothing happens until the fuse gets
lit." What a great moment in time to embrace change and
let it reveal your power.
